No Rick Rubin…

Anthony was interviewed in front of fans in NYC yesterday as part of the promotion of ‘Fandemonium’. During the interview he announced that Rick Rubin would not be producing the new album,

Rick Rubin is sadly not producing this record… We’re about to experiment with some different individuals that are good at producing music so when one of them clicks, we’ll let you know who it’s going to be. It’s pretty exciting. I feel like it’s a better batch of songs than we’ve had in a long time…and I’ve never seen these boys so hungry to roll up their sleeves and make a record.

Anthony Kiedis & The Roots on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

Anthony appeared on the Jimmy Fallon ‘The Tonight Show’ on Thursday 20th November. He performed ‘Under The Bridge’ as a ‘sit-in’ with The Roots  and there was also a plug for the ‘Fandemonium’ book with Anthony briefly talking about the book; although from the clip below (all I’ve seen here as I don’t think the show is broadcast here in the UK), it seemed to be mostly the host talking about a t-shirt swapping story with Anthony…

Chad Smith Update

Along with the couple of articles featuring Flea (post below), a lengthy article has come out featuring Chad Smith. It is a five page interview with Music Radar and discusses a number of things including Chad’s recent collaboration on ‘The Process’ album with Bill Laswell and Jon Batiste, his appearance at the Greenfield school as part of the Turnaround Arts program and there is also a comment about the new Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album:

So what’s the status with the next Chili Peppers record? Where are you guys at with it?

“We’re writing our songs, and we’re really close to getting in to start recording. I think we’ll probably go up to December, do a little pre-production on ‘em, and then we’ll take a little Christmas break. I hope to be recording after the first of the year.

“We’ve probably worked up close to 30 songs. I don’t know if we’ll record all of them. I think last time we overdid it a little, so we’re trying to really hone in on the ones that’ll rise to the top. Maybe we’ll do a bit more pre-production so we can make sure the songs are the best they can be. Traditionally, we’ve always recorded 25 or 30 songs, so we’ll see. It won’t be 50 like last time. [Laughs] We always say, ‘Oh, we’re doing to do a Beatles thing and just do 10 or 11 songs,’ and then it always turns into an epic fucking thing. This time, I thing we’ll focus on the quality and not the quantity.” Source: Music Radar

Flea Update

A couple of articles have come out in the last couple of days about Flea.

One is another post about Flea’s forthcoming autobiography (no publishing date yet) saying that the bassist now has a publishing deal with Grand Central Publishing, a division of the Hachette Book Group:

Grand Central announced Tuesday that the book, currently untitled, would be a window into Flea’s “intense and dynamic life.” He will cover his years with singer Anthony Kiedis and his “tumultuous” path with the Red Hot Chili Peppers over the past three decades. Source

The other was an article about Flea’s appearance on the Larry king show with a video (sorry can’t find an embed link) talking about his childhood and appearance in the ‘Low Down’  movie:

“I was kind of a rough kid. I was on the street, I was getting in trouble, I was doing petty crimes, I was on drugs. The one thing that kept me focused was the music programs in the public schools that I went to, it gave you a sense of self, a sense of discipline, something to work on.”

Angra, Feli and Pamela at the Signing

So, yesterday and the signing of Fandemonium! The book signing was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. with wristbands being available from 9 a.m. and was held at Barnes & Noble, The Grove, Los Angeles. Originally the event was advertised as having Anthony Kiedis and photographer David Mushegain in attendance but during the day it was announced that more than one Red Hot Chili Pepper band member would be there! …

As it turned out, RHCP were represented by Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith and Flea. David Mushegain was of course there (if you don’t know, Dave is the person at the table with a red bandana) and milling around in the background were several other recognizable faces including Chris Warren (Chad’s drum tech whom many of you will have seen playing on stage with the band during the ‘I’m With You’ tour concerts) and Anthony’s girlfriend, Helena Vestergaard.

If anyone else has info/photos/video of the event and would like to share, I’d love to hear from you!

Update on New RHCP Album

Update on the new Red Hot Chili Peppers’ album based:

In an interview this morning with KROQ, Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis announced that the Chili Peppers will be returning to the studio to record their newly written album next month. When approached about details, Kiedis stated that he wants the new album to only be 13 songs, however it is likely that they will “put 10 more songs on top of that.” Kiedis felt that this album will show Josh Klinghoffer’s coming of age as their guitarist and that the new material will have him, as a guitarist and songwriter, stand out a lot. Kiedis also talked at some lengths about his friendships with his bandmates, and how they have come to effect him musically and emotionally. No producer or other production members were mentioned regarding the album’s recording and production, reinforcing the rumors of a different producer than “fifth Chili Pepper” Rick Rubin for the new album.  Source

Flea Guests on Bryan Ferry’s Avonmore Album

Byran Ferry’s new album, ‘Avonmore’ is due out next week and features guest appearances from Ferry’s own son, Tara,  as well a number of artists including Johnny Marr, Nile Rodgers, Ronnie Spector, Mark Knopfler and  Flea:

The title track, meanwhile, features an appearance from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whom Ferry met in Los Angeles through British artist Damien Hirst.

“When he came to the session he had this great bass guitar that Damien had given him that which was kind of coated with butterflies,” recalled Ferry. “A beautiful instrument and worth millions, I guess. So that’s what he played. He’s a very good player, lots of energy and we got on very well. He plays the bass sort of hundreds of notes a second, very fast. He’s like a virtuoso bass player.”
