RHCP featured in an episode of The Simpsons called, ‘Krusty Gets Kancelled’ (Series 4, episode 22 -last one in the series). It first aired on May 13, 1993.
The outline of the episode is that Krusty’s show gets cancelled following the arrival of a new puppet, called Gabbo who becomes much more popular than the Klown. Bart Simpson tries to get Krusty his show back by enlisting the help of a number of stars to perform in a come back special- the Chili Peppers are one of those acts.
Note: The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ guitarist at the time was Arik Marshall and he features in the episode along with Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad Smith.
I’ve not added any video as any videos posted on sites such as YouTube are normally removed quickly due to copyright and are usually just snippets (often footage of someone pointing a camera at a TV screen; I have the same and the quality isn’t good enough to post. I copied the relevant bits for reference while staying at a holiday cottage where they had a video player and it was one of the tapes they provided- nice coincidence!- just so I could check everything while I put this together).
It starts with a ‘Playing Tonight’ sign on the roof of the bar:
The scene swaps to inside the bar and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are standing at the end of Moe’s bar.
Anthony Kiedis: You told our agent this place holds 30,000 people.
Moe: It does. We had 30 000 people here last night. Now play! The audience [1 person!] is getting restless.
Seated customer: Chili Willi! We want Chili Willi!!!
Bart Simpson walks in
Bart Simpson: Hey! Red Hot Chili Peppers Would you guys like to appear on a Krusty the Klown Special?
Flea: Sure, if you can get us out of this gig
Bart Simpson: No problemo. Hey Moe! Look over there!!!
Moe turns around and RHCP run out.
Moe: What am I looking at? I don’t see nothing? I’m going to stop soon….
Dressing room before the show
Krusty: Ummm… boys. The network has a problem with some of your lyrics. Would you mind changing them for the show?
Anthony Kiedis: Forget you, clown.
Chad Smith: Hey! Our lyrics are like our children, man. No way.
Krusty: Well, OK. But here where you say, ‘What I got, you got and get put it in you,’ how about just, ‘What I’d like is I’d like to hug and kiss you’?
Flea: Wow that’s much better!
Arik Marshall: Everyone can enjoy that!
Concert: RHCP play ‘Give It Away’ for a few seconds (chorus)
Krusty: Dancing around in their underwear. That is so degrading.
After the concert, RHCP come running into the bar. Band call out, ‘Look up Moe!’, ‘ Hey Moe!’ etc.
Moe: Hey! You can’t come in here dressed like that [they are still wearing the same underwear/outfits as during the show].
Customer 1: Get with the times, Moe
Customer 2: Yeah, I say if it feels good, do it
Customer 1: Alriiight…laughs.
There’s a few seconds of the scene in the bar with the band standing to one side.
