Flea: “Next thing I knew two weeks later I was onstage rocking out like a feral beast and I realised that was something for me that was so immediate and so intense and I had a much better chance of girls liking me when I did it.”
Presenter: Girls liked you more playing the guitar than the trumpet?
Flea: “Girls much more, especially back then, liked a guy in a rock band way better than like a jazz kid geek in a suit with a trumpet.”

I’ve finally written up (where does the time go?!) and added the transcript to the Australian interview that was aired on May 29th. The video link has also been updated as the previous one was removed- watch it while you can just in case this version gets removed too! You can find the link and transcript HERE

All members of RHCP are interviewed but Anthony Kiedis and Flea are the main ones featured and there are lots of interesting comments and details about their friendship and the band.

I’ve also scanned and uploaded the latest version of OOR magazine from The Netherlands (06 2016). I knew there was a retrospective photo of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the front and a review of ‘The Getaway’ but I had no idea there was also a 10 page article (it seems to be a history of the band) until I received it today (many thanks to my lovely friend Wil who rushed out to get the magazine and sent it to me!). Lots of pictures- the cover gives some idea as to what may be inside (Warning! Maybe don’t open next to Grandma or young children!). You can see full scans HERE for reference purposes but if you are in The Netherlands and can buy a copy please do.

This is another piece of the interview that Anthony Kiedis did for ET Canada. In it he’s talking about the single ‘Dark Necessities’ from the new RHCP album The Getaway.

Anthony Kiedis Discusses “Dark Necessities” [The Getaway]

Anthony Kiedis: So that was the song that was written in the studio with Brian Burton. A lot of the songs we had already and some of them were created spontaneously in the studio with Brian. That was a new one and so, they sent that to me on a CD because I’m old-school like that and I like to go work in my car that has a CD player. And I listened to it and I was pretty immediately stricken with my part in the song which sometimes happens and sometimes doesn’t. Sometimes you hear a piece of music that you fall in love with but you have no idea as a vocalist what you’re supposed to do with it. It just doesn’t make sense. The timing is weird, the melodies are weird. With that song I was like I know what to do with the song; I think I know what my part is. And I took that and went to Hawaii and wrote lyrics for it and it just kind of speaks to …the beauty of our dark sides and how much creativity and growth and light actually comes out of those difficult struggles that we have on the insides of our heads that no one else can see. And I knew that song meant a tonne to Brian and that it was one of his favourite musical tracks and I came in and sang it after I got from Hawaii and he was feeling it which made me feel great because sometimes he’s like, ‘That’s not happening. Go back and try again.” But with that one it was working and ahh, umm… the more that song did…  er gestate the better it got until it just became.  That was Brian’s push for a single so our producer, once we realised ‘The Getaway’ wasn’t going to happen, ummm, record company, managers wanted ‘Go Robot’, Brian was like I love ‘Go Robot’ but it’s got to be ‘Dark Necessities’ and he literally went and fought for it with a sword in his hand until he got his way.

This snippet has also been released where he talking about some of his previous decisions and how musical his son, Everly bear, is:

Anthony Kiedis Looks To The Past

Interviewer: Do you ever look back on some of the things you’ve done and just think what was I thinking then? Whether it’s fashion or a move you made or a song?
Anthony Kiedis: Moves no. Because even the most ridiculous moves I’m all for them. Sometimes the more absurd and embarrassing the better. Fashion, I’ve had a couple of moments where I do question my sanity and I’ve seen some photo shoots and I was like whoa! Song wise, I don’t even mind writing a bad song or a silly song or a song that I don’t want to play today. It made sense at that moment and if it is a song and we have worked on it, I have love for it.

Voice over: And now he has a batch of new songs to love with the June 17 release of ‘The Getaway.’

Anthony Kiedis: Music still gives me one of the best feelings on earth.
Voice over: Anthony’s son, Everly, seen in this Marc Jacob’s ad seems to have the music bug too.
Anthony Kiedis: He’s learning piano and he’s a natural born vocalist. He likes singing and we like writing songs daily about anything and everything.
Interviewer: Is he a barometer at all for your music?
Anthony Kiedis: Umm… Yeah, there’s only one song he’s not in love with on this record but overall he likes this record better than anything we’ve ever done in the past. And he can sing every lyric on this new record. So when I see him smile and when I see him look at me like ‘You wrote that Dad?!’, it’s a good feeling.

RHCP Tour 2016: iHeart Radio ‘The Getaway’ Launch Party

iheart-radio-launch-rhcpSource Photo by Ronin Guerra

UPDATED: Video of the whole show added at the bottom of the page

Today/yesterday (time zones!) the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a concert for iHeart Radio to a crowd of 200 fans who had won tickets through competitions for the show. The concert was recorded and will be broadcast on June 17th which is the launch date for RHCP’s new album ”The Getaway.’

New songs from ‘The Getaway’ were played at the concert and as a result, security at the concert was tight with guests searched and no recording devices were allowed in. Dark Necessities got its second public live performance (the first being at last weekend’s Rock On The Range festival in Ohio) and Sick Love, This Ticonderoga and Go Robot were played for the first time.

Other Information:
They discussed that Sick Love is the song that features Elton John (I’m in England, can I name him? Or is it only his partner we can’t discuss without the threat of law suits?!) and apparently it’s “really slow and mellow”. It was also played twice to allow for an edit as there were mistakes made while playing it the first time.

Many thanks to Angra who was there!!!!

iHeart Radio Concert

Tonight IS the night for the iHeart Radio show Red Hot Chili Peppers’ launch party concert for ‘The Getaway’ which will be recorded for broadcast on the album release date (17th June)!

I don’t expect much news to come out from the actual concert because there is a really strict entry policy and no phones or cameras are being allowed into the venue – which also means very little in terms of photos or videos unless the band/radio station release something 🙁 But hopefully we will find out something about the evening afterwards!
This is dedicated to everyone going tonight! I’m totally envious (and I think everyone else is too!) but I hope you have an amazing time! You are so lucky! Enjoy!!! 🙂

Chad Smith Interview on Absolute Radio

Chad Smith has just been interview on Absolute Radio here in the UK (May 17th). I’m not a typist so I couldn’t keep up with everything so I took notes. Milan at RHCP.us has recorded it but I have a migraine and sorry I don’t feel like transcribing the whole thing now. These are the main things:

Everyone said hello and then the interviewer asked about Anthony Kiedis following his hospitalization and cancellation of the Weenie Roast gig:

CS: Anthony Kiedis had stomach flu a couple of weeks ago and it came back. He’s on the mend and we will be playing this weekend (Ohio, Rock in the Range).

The conversation then moved to the new RHCP album, ‘The Getaway’ and the release date being a month today:

CS: [Joking] It’s like having a c-section on the 17th June and it’s coming out! Ready or not!

He then went on to mention the ups and downs e.g. Flea breaking his arm the first time they were in the studio.

It then moved to a discussion about Rick Rubin not producing for the first time in 25 years.

CS: We love Rick Rubin and he’s a great friend of ours but we just wanted to do something different and try someone new be inspired in a different way which lead to Brian and Nigel. Collaborative effort

‘Dark Necessities’ was then played with a crazy intro from Chad!

CS: Talking about live performances; proper bands love to play!

On playing festivals:

CS: It’s difficult putting a set list together because we want to play new songs but at a festival don’t have just fans so it’s a difficult balance. Also have a shorter set which has an effect.

On set lists: Anthony Kiedis is in charge of writing the set list and how his voice is feeling is taken into account but we all have an input. Says he thinks Reading set list will be different to the Leeds set list.

Fan Question: Chad Smith explains they’ve not played anything live yet. They had planned to play Dark Necessities at Weenie Roast. They haven’t played any of the new songs yet.

Talking about playing the new songs: I love ‘Turning Red’; ‘Go Robot’ is a funky song I love playing. Will possibly be a single.

Fan Question: Where do you see the band in 10 years?

CS: Playing concerts and enjoying life! Will keep going! What else could I do?!

RHCP The Getaway Release Party

the-getaway-red-hot-chili-peppers-new-album-june-17-2016

Update:

The first information about this launch party was from the radio site and it made it seem as though the launch party took place on June 17th with streaming of the show online. However, there is now information on the official RHCP website which says the concert will actually take place on May 17th! And it will then be broadcast on the evening of June 17th to coincide with the release date of the album. The new information also states that Tuesday’s concert will take place at  iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank, CA.

Original Post:

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform songs for the first time from ‘The Getaway’ during an exclusive concert in Los Angeles! The concert will take place on 17th June to coincide with the album release date.  The  Red Hot Chili Peppers iHeartRadio Album Release Party will be hosted by Harms on AT&T LIVE. The RHCP set will apparently also include some Chili Peppers’ favourites such as ‘Scar Tissue’ and ‘Dani California along with the new numbers. The concert will also be streamed.

How To Stream The Concert

If you can’t make it to the show, you can tune in free for a live video stream of the exclusive Red Hot Chili Peppers iHeartRadio Album Release Party on AT&T LIVE on the Audience Network on Friday, June 17th (album release day) at 9 p.m. ET  on DIRECTV Channel 239 or U-verse Channel 1114 or on iHeartRadio.com/watchATT.

(*Note: this is the information from the website. I’m not sure if anyone outside the US will be able to listen- I know a load of us couldn’t listen to the first play of ‘Dark Necessities’).
