2009 Rock Chicks by Ronni Cooper

I’ve debated whether to include this or not as it’s fiction but as RHCP are mentioned, I decided I would- I picked the book up in a clearance shop and thought it looked like an interesting read (had no idea RHCP would feature in it). Was actually good (plot keeps you guessing) although very explicit! The story is fictional (about a rock band and the women involved with it) but it’s set against the real backdrop of late 80s LA: the Sunset Strip, Rainbow Bar and Grill, Chateau Marmont and populated with real people (e.g. David Geffen) and real bands especially the ‘big-haired’ bands such as Motley Crue and Guns N’ Roses who are woven within the details of the fictional narrative.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are mentioned a couple of times:

…Over at EMI, there were some punks with a fucking crazy name, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who were set for greatness, despite the rumours that Kiedis and Slovak, their core guys, were on their way to becoming hardcore dope freaks.

‘Any word yet?’ Coco shouted into the phone, straining to make herself heard over the searing guitar riff on the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Under the Bridge’. It was day two of a shoot for Victoria’s Secret in New York and she was working with Millie Jacks, her favourite photographer for two reasons: she took killer shots and she liked the music real hard and real loud. Today Coco needed some Kiedis, some raw, hot, sexed-up Kiedis to put her in the mood to give the kind of vibe that Millie needed….

(Not copied) The Chilis reference above is continued a little further on:

…The last notes of the Chilis faded away…
