Angel Delight!
Dave Grohl shows K! comp winners a good time in LA

FOO FIGHTERS enjoyed a triumphant homecoming in Los Angeles last week, launching their new ‘One By One’ album with two low-key club shows. During a 15-song set at the Wiltern club in West Hollywood on October 22, the day on which One By One’ was released in America, Dave Grohl drew loud cheers from the 2,000-strong crowd when he stated that he now considered his adopted hometown “more like a neighbourhood, not just titty bars”. More bizarrely, the Foo’s mainman also claimed that half of the band’s new album was written by Colombian pop princess Shakira!

On hand to witness the fun was 25-year-old Brad Glover, the lucky winner of Kerrang!’s recent ‘Meet the Foo Fighters In LA competition. And following the show, Glover, along with his 22-year-old girlfriend Emma Szpigelman, did indeed meet the Foos, with. Dave Grohl introducing the pair to family and friends, before joining the disbelieving couple for drinks at their plush Hollywood hotel. “When I heard I’d won, my mum watched the Foo Fighters videos on Kerrang! TV and said, ‘Oh, I hope he’s nice’,” a delighted Brad tells Kerrang!. “In fact, Dave honestly couldn’t have treated us any better. He went out of his way to have a beer with us back at our hotel, and wouldn’t even let us pay. He’s a cool geezer, a top man. They say you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but in this case I’d make an exception. He’s the real deal.”

Grohl and the Foos returned to the Wiltern four days later, on October 26, to play the KROQ Halloween Ball alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers. With disarming honesty, Chili Peppers bassist Flea tells Kerrang! that the sole purpose of the show was “to keep our noses firmly implanted in the asshole of the big local rock station”. Nice.

Currently finishing off their US club tour, Foo Fighters kick off their UK arena tour at Manchester Evening News arena on November 16. The Chili Peppers will play their own UK arena dates in March 2003.
