The backstage looping took place after all three had appeared on Saturday Night Live, Roseanne hosting the show and Madonna acting as straightperson with her in a comedy sketch. But what really made Madonna’s month was the announcement that she’d been inaugurated as vice-president of London’s ICA. This unique honour – literally, as it transpires there isn’t even a president – arose from a chance, but published, remark when she played Wembley Stadium in 1990. “She just said she liked coming to the ICA,” says a spokeswoman for the arts centre, which has fostered the career of many an unheralded left-field band over the last 15 years. “We wrote to her, offering a vice-presidency and she said yes.” Madonna’s official duties are unclear as yet, but they’re pretty sure to be something connected with publicity and a fund-raising campaign.
